AboutBonnie Jean Loukus is an interdisciplinary artist, practicing printmaking, oil painting, letterpress, and book arts while living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. During the brief Michigan summers, when the days are long and the light is good, she focuses on oil painting. She paints at the family homestead, overlooking former potato fields and cow pastures where her dad now "makes hay." When the days become short and dark, she turns her practice to printmaking, spending the evenings carving linoleum blocks at her home, then printing on a Vandercook IV press at her place of employment, the Copper Country Community Arts Center.
She has exhibited nationally and her work is part of U.S. and international collections in Estonia, the United Kingdom, and others. She was awarded an artists residency at TYPA, formerly the Estonian Print and Paper Museum in Tartu, Estonia at the end of 2019. Bonnie is the Associate Director of the Copper Country Community Arts Center, a non-profit organization in Hancock, Michigan. She coordinates its educational programs and fundraising events, maintains its social media, and writes grants. She also curates the only Youth Gallery in Upper Michigan and assists with all other aspects of running a non-profit. She has taught classes for people of all ages in studio arts and book arts. She volunteers as artist mentor for the U.S. National Park Service's Isle Royale Teen Artist-in-Residence program. In 2008 she was awarded a full four-year scholarship to attend Finlandia University. She received a BA of Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts, an honors program that focused on the interconnectedness of arts, culture, and the environment. She graduated summa cum laude in 2010. Bonnie was born in Laurium, Michigan. She continues to enjoy living on a beautiful and remote peninsula in Lake Superior. |
